"Cruel Summer" is the name of the 3rd Studio Album release of Ace of Base for America and Japan, released on July 14, 1998. Arista Records chose instead of the title "Flowers" Ace Of Base's new cover song of from artist "Bananaramas'" "Cruel Summer" to be the lead single for release in the America. From the 2 versions of the album "Flowers" and "Cruel Summer". "Flowers" contains the songs "Dr. Sun", "I Pray", "Captain Nemo", "Cruel Summer Big Bonus Remix", the originals versions of "Travel to Romantis", "He Decides", "Donnie" and first european single "Life is a Flower". Arista Records was not thrilled with much of the euro sound of Ace of Base's latest material and made many changes with "Life Is A Flower" going through the biggest change from its title, lyrics and arrangements to a different key to the new title "Whenever You're Near Me" and released as the second single in the America, while the track "Travel To Romantis" was given to remixer "Love to Infinity" and the track "Donnie" given to producer "Ole Evenrude" to reproduce for the US Album. Ceo, Clive Davis even requested that they even sing songs from other song writers and requested that Ace of Base record the song "Everitime It Rains"with first recording made by Jenny Berggren and rejected by Clive Davis' demand to have Malin (Linn) Berggren be the lead vocal on the track, making it the only song sung completely by Malin (Linn) Berggren for the Album. For the Japanese Album release they used the same playlist as the US album except for the song "Whenever Your Near Me" replaced by "Life Is A Flower" and released as first single in Japan, the Japanese album also added the Songs "Dr. Sun" and a special B side titled "Into The Night Of Blue". Charts performance was great for the first single "Cruel Summer" reaching the top #10th spot in the USA, Arista then released "Whenever You're Near Me" with much disappointment the song only charted at #76 and no singles released after in the USA.
